So this weekend I was able to take a trip to Toronto and see my family as well as my Guru Amma whom I missed in NYC. We go there at 4pm and didn’t leave until around 2 am right after we received our Darshan. For those of you who don’t know Amma is check out what she is all about at Amma.org

We went for her last program on her North American tour. We got holy water! She makes me so happy.

Last night, I dreamed I was hanging out with Amma at one of her events. She had a drink of my orange juice but then my friend offered me a glass of chocolate milk while Amma was turned around. I forgot I was now holding chocolate milk instead of orange juice when I handed Amma some chocolate milk. I panicked and screamed for Amma not to drink the chocolate milk since I reasoned Amma is vegan. It was too late, she had a sip then spitted it out. Then I woke up all worried and turned to the picture of Amma beside my bed. She still had a huge smile on so all is good! :)

The racialized, Eurocentric homo-gendered iconography of Catholicism automatically coerces someone existing outside of that spectrum to naturally experience isolation and distancing. This is especially probable for a Black girl child who wondered why nowhere in the Catholic Cathedrals where she genuflected, did she see an image of God in the form of sculpture, oil painting, or stain glass window that looked anything remotely like herself.

What happens then, when that same little Black girl, with Jamaican roots and upper-middle class upbringing, interacts with those negating images? She grows up into a Black woman, or most notably, a “rude gyal” with an attitude, who would thirty-something years later unabashedly confront that iconography, in the form of a series entitled Yo Mama. Although according to Genesis 1:26, God created (wo)man in the image of Him(her)self, nowhere in Christian texts could be found a brown skin God with the face of a girl child from the Diaspora. That is not until Renee Cox decided to photograph herself nude as Jesus surrounded by 12 fully-clothed male disciples, all of them Black with the exception of Judas, who was white, and titled the 5-paneled piece Yo Mama’s Last Supper. Are you waiting for God to do something in your life? One thing I’ve learned is that waiting should not be a passive thing. When we’re waiting the correct way, we’re on the lookout. We talk like what we are believing for is going to happen. We act like it’s going to happen. We’re making preparations.

It’s just like when you’re expecting someone for dinner; you don’t wait till they show up before you decide to start cooking. Most likely you start early in the day. You make sure the house is clean, you go to the grocery store, and maybe you buy some flowers for the table. You make preparations because you’re expecting someone. Well, that’s the attitude we need to have while we’re waiting for God’s promises to come to pass. As you put actions behind your prayers, your faith comes alive and opens the door for God to move mightily on your behalf.

A Prayer for Today

“Father God, I choose to put actions behind my faith today. I trust that You are at work in my life. I will wait the right way—with expectancy—knowing that my faith in You opens the door for Your hand to move in my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
